Thank you to the Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal!

Pro Patria Centre has been successful in obtaining a grant for the  Kitchen Garden to Plate: nutrition for the mind, body and soul project.

Through our research establishing PPC we know that food gardening and better nutrition have positive impacts on mental health and physical health. Programs that have community and social engagement at their core are a useful adjunct to other medical and allied health interventions. We have conducted an extensive survey of the region’s ex-ADF population and the following results highlight the need for new approaches in mental and physical health programs for this community.

Pro Patria Centre (PPC) is committed to finding innovative non-clinical programs to achieve wholistic mental and physical health for the ex-services community in the Riverina. Our Centre is housed at the former Carmelite Monastery in Ashmont, NSW. Existing on the property is a well-designed kitchen garden that needs some love and attention to bring it back to productive capacity. It has good bones!  PPC has identified a need within our target group for better nutrition where participants in our program will learn how to grow their own food, prepare and cook for better health. The program involves all members of the ex-service members’ family. Strengthening family bonds in a creative and supportive endeavour, growing and preparing nutritious food, that will enhance wellbeing and mental health beyond the program. The skills learned will be transferable to their home setting. To be sustainable we must grow seasonal food onsite as much as possible. This grant will help us deliver that component of the program.

The project aims to rejuvenate the kitchen garden as part of the PPC’s wholistic approach to better mental health through gardening and better nutrition. Strengthening family bonds in a creative and supportive endeavour, growing and preparing nutritious food, that will enhance wellbeing and mental health beyond the program. The skills learned will be transferable to their home setting. To be sustainable we must grow seasonal food onsite as much as possible.
