Royal Commission Update: Defence and Veterans Legal Service coming to Wagga Wagga

The Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide is an important ongoing investigation that seeks to provide closure and support for those who have been affected by the tragic loss of loved ones in the defence and veteran community.

Recently, Public Hearings were held in Wagga Wagga at the end of 2022 with a focus on ADF recruitment and the bases, but this is just the beginning of the Commission's work. The Royal Commission is now accepting requests for private sessions until Friday 28 April 2023 and submissions until Friday 13 October 2023. It will continue to hold private sessions well into 2024.

If you have been impacted by suicide through polypharmacy (5 or more medications), brain injuries, severe PTSD reactions, family breakdowns, or have been neglected/abused by organisations connected to service in the ADF, please make time to attend the upcoming sessions. The Defence and Veterans Legal Service (DAVLS) Team will be returning to Wagga to provide support and legal guidance to veterans and families affected by suicide, suicide ideation, attempted self-harm, or damaging behaviors.

The DAVLS is a fully funded, independent legal service that does not charge clients. Their team of experienced lawyers understands the unique challenges faced by veterans and their families, and are committed to providing compassionate, personalised support to those in need.

If you are called to be a witness at a public hearing, the Royal Commission will make arrangements for you to attend the venue where the hearing is taking place.

We encourage anyone who has been impacted by suicide within the defence and veteran community to take advantage of the resources available through the Royal Commission and the DAVLS. Together, we can work towards healing and creating a brighter future for our service men and women.

DAVLS will be in Wagga the week beginning 20 March 2023.
