Media Release: Commonwealth Government’s Veterans’ Acute Housing Program Grant Update
Wagga Wagga, NSW – August 26, 2024 –The Pro Patria Centre and the Pro Patria Property Trust with the dedicated support of local federal member Michael McCormack, and several RSL sub Branches across the region, have been working diligently to assemble a consortium of veteran support agencies to apply for the Commonwealth Government’s Veterans’ Acute Housing Program grant. The Acute Housing Program Grant Guidelines stressed that a consortium of veteran support agencies was essential for a favourable outcome to the application. This initiative aims to address the urgent housing needs of veterans and provide them with essential support services.
We are advising our supporters that the timeline for the grant application was too tight for key members of the consortium to commit the capital required for this project to be successful.
A spokesperson for the Pro Patria Centre stated, “We are disappointed that this grant application will not go ahead. Our commitment to supporting our veterans remains unwavering. We must continue to seek solutions that will help our veterans access the housing and support they need. We understand the complexities involved in collaboration but are optimistic that we can still achieve a solution. We will continue to work with other organisations in the region and invite other veteran support organisations and interested parties to join us in this important endeavour to better serve our veterans."
A 2021 survey conducted by the Pro Patria Centre indicated that 10% of respondents had experienced some form of housing crisis in the previous five years, highlighting the growing urgency of the situation within the Riverina community.
The Pro Patria Centre is actively pursuing alternative partnerships and strategies to ensure that a practical response and solution to the acute housing crisis for veterans and their families can move forward effectively. The need for immediate housing solutions for veterans is critical, and the Pro Patria Centre is determined to find ways to make this program a reality.
