Media Release 15 July 2021

The Pro Patria Centre (PPC) is encouraged by the support from the local Wagga Wagga RSL Sub-branch after being advised that members last night voted ‘in-principle’ approval to purchase the Carmelite Monastery site with the intent to lease it back to the Pro Patria Centre (see attachment – RSL Wagga Wagga Sub-Branch Special Agenda Item).
This is another step forward for this exciting project. The purchase will cement the PPC as a locally owned and operated facility for Riverina veterans and first responders, and their families, who are already accessing a wide range of services and supports usually unavailable in a regional area.
In a recent speech to parliament about provision of services for veterans in regional areas, former Veterans Affairs Minister, Darren Chester highlighted the importance of “local solutions to local problems driven by local communities” and is very keen to “look at new models of delivering service and look at ways of supporting those veterans who may require some assistance, whether it’s with their physical health or their mental health.”
Establishing the Pro Patria Centre is a strong response to a call from Riverina veterans to deliver what they need in the way they want to access it.
This supportive move by the Wagga Wagga RSL Sub-branch shows an unprecedented level of cooperation by local groups to provide the crucial services and supports for the Riverina’s significant veteran community.
Local purchase of the site enables the Pro Patria Centre to flourish, backed by the confidence of enormous and growing community support. It also secures the Monastery site in local hands, under the watchful eye of those who previously protected our country and our values, now turning their energy to be the custodians and guardians of this centrepiece of Ashmont’s history and community.
Lachlan Feeney – local veteran, PPC Board member
Graeme Wren – local veteran, former RAAF commander
